reaction to immersion in cold water: a reflex in mammals in which the heart rate slows and blood vessels of the skin narrow on immersion in cold water to conserve oxygen. The reflex is strongest in water animals such as seals, but is still present to a minor extent in nonaquatic animals, including humans.
