Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb take up defensive positions: to prepare trenches or other defensive structures, or establish a force or equipment in a defensive position

2. intransitive verb resist attack: to put up a stubborn resistance to an attack

3. intransitive verb maintain opinion stubbornly: to stick to an established position, e.g. in an argument, and fight stubbornly to maintain it

4. intransitive verb start eating: to start eating, especially in an enthusiastic way ( informal )

5. intransitive verb set to work: to begin work with great determination ( informal )

6. transitive verb bury plants: to cover plants or the remains of a crop by turning over the soil in which they are growing and burying them
