metabolic disorder affecting blood sugar levels: a disorder in which there is no control of blood sugar, through inadequate insulin production Type 1 or decreased sensitivity to insulin Type 2, causing kidney, eye, and nerve damage. Type 1 usually develops in childhood and requires lifelong injection of insulin, while Type 2 typically develops in middle age and can usually be controlled by diet and drugs.
