box lyre (plural box lyres)

Definition:
 
plucked musical instrument: a plucked stringed instrument, formed from a hollow wooden box with strings running across the soundboard, which are attached to arms jutting out to form a crossbar. Box lyres were known in ancient Sumer in 2800 bc and were widely played in Europe until ad 1000.
