1. sea animal with eight arms: a sea animal with a big head, a soft oval body, well-developed eyes, and eight arms containing rows of suckers. It usually lives on the ocean floor. Genus Octopus.

2. something with far-reaching influence: something, especially an organization, that has many branches and forms of influence or control
