notional

no·tion·al [ nṓshən'l, nṓshnəl ]

adjective
Definition:

1. imaginary or hypothetical: existing only as an idea or in theory, not in reality

2. abstract or speculative: relating to or characteristic of ideas or concepts

3. linguistics used with definite meaning: used in a specific concrete sense as opposed to expressing a grammatical relationship. For example, "did" in "We did (= carried out) the work" is notional, whereas "did" in "Why didn't she come?" is not.
