Masada

Ma·sa·da [ mə sdə ] ancient ruined fortress in Israel, on a mountaintop 48.3 km (30 mi) southeast of Jerusalem, southwest of the Dead Sea. It was used as a stronghold by the Jewish Zealots in the final two years of their rebellion against Roman rule (ad 66-73). After a siege lasting nearly two years, almost all the occupants of the fortress killed themselves rather than surrender to the Romans.
