French national anthem: the French national anthem, written in Strasbourg in 1792 by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, a captain in the French revolutionary army. Originally called "War Song of the Army of the Rhine," its present name derives from its popularity with army units from Marseilles, the first to sing it in Paris.
