Koo·te·nay [ kt'n ày ] or Koo·te·nai [ kt'n ày ] river of the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. It rises in the Rocky Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, flows into the United States, then reenters Canada through Kootenay Lake and joins the Columbia River.
