Hes·se [ hess, héssə ] state and historic duchy in west central Germany. Largely an agricultural region, it is drained by the Rhine and Main rivers in the west and, in the northeast, by the Weser River. Capital: Wiesbaden. Population: 5,837,000 (1992).
