Definition:
 
1. kneel: to bend the right knee to the floor and rise again as a gesture of religious respect, especially in a Roman Catholic or Anglican church

2. show excessive respect: to show undeserved or unnecessarily deferential respect for somebody or something

[Mid-19th century. < ecclesiastical Latin genuflectere "bend the knee" < Latin genu "knee" + flectere "bend"]
