Cultural Note

The Ballad of Reading Gaol, a poem (1898) by British writer Oscar Wilde. Wilde's last work, written while he was imprisoned for "homosexual activities," it is the story of the trial and execution of murderer Charles Thomas Wooldridge, a fellow inmate at the jail. It deals with the harshness of prison conditions and the idea of forgiveness.
