Definition:
 
1. transitive verb compliment somebody to win favor: to compliment somebody too much, often without sincerity, especially in order to gain an advantage

2. transitive verb appeal to somebody's vanity: to please somebody by paying him or her particular attention, especially with a request to take some prominent role
