Definition:
 
1. thwart somebody or something: to prevent somebody or something from succeeding or something from coming to fruition
All attempts to put to sea were frustrated by high winds.

2. discourage somebody: to make somebody feel disappointed, exasperated, or weary because of thwarted goals or unsatisfied desires
