1. capital city of Bío-Bío Region, central Chile, situated on the Bío-Bío River, 418 km (260 mi) southwest of Santiago. Population: 225,158 (2006 estimate).
2. capital city of Concepción Department, central Paraguay, situated on the Paraguay River. It is the commercial centre of northern Paraguay and serves as a free port for southwestern Brazil. Population: 35,276 (1992).
