Chech·nya [ chéchnee ə, chech ny ] autonomous republic in southwestern Russia that formally separated from Ingushetia in 1992. In 1994, Russia refused to recognize Chechnya's independence, resulting in a conflict that ended formally in 1997. Capital: Grozny. Population: 862,000 (1997).
