Canary Islands

Ca·nar·y Is·lands [ kə nérree ləndz ] or Ca·nar·ies [ kə nérreez ] autonomous region of Spain consisting of a group of islands off the northwestern coast of Africa, comprising the provinces of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. They consist of seven large islands and various islets. The climate is subtropical and tourism is important, especially on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Population: 1,631,498 (1995).
Area: 7,273 sq km (2,808 sq mi.)
