off [ awf, of ] CORE MEANING: a grammatical word used to indicate separation or distance between two points, especially movement away from the speaker
 (adv)  He ran off before I could stop him.
 (prep)  The bottle rolled off the ledge and fell to the floor.
Definition:
 
1. preposition so as to leave: so as to come out of or leave a bus, train, or plane
Check you have all your belongings before getting off the bus.

2. preposition so as to keep away from: so as to keep away from, avoid stepping on, or be at a distance from or to the side of
The sign said "Please keep off the grass."

Word Usage

There are two usages of off that should be avoided in formal writing. The first involves off plus of: The actors stepped off [not off of] the stage. The second problem involves the use of off after certain verbs like buy or borrow, which mean "to obtain something from a source": I bought the computer from [not off] my roommate.
