1. day in Roman calendar: in the ancient Roman calendar, the ninth day before the ides of each month counting inclusively. The nones are the seventh day of March, May, July, and October, the fifth day of any other month.

2. time for afternoon prayer: in the Roman Catholic Church, the fifth of the seven separate hours canonical hours that are set aside for prayer each day. This was originally held at the ninth hour after sunrise.
