Definition:
 
1. edible sea organism: an edible bivalve mollusk with a blue-black shell that lives attached to objects in the ocean. Genus Mytilus.

2. freshwater mollusk: a freshwater bivalve mollusk whose shell is a source of mother-of-pearl. Genera Anodonta, Unio.

[Pre-12th century. < assumed Vulgar Latin muscula, alteration of Latin musculus "small mouse" (see muscle); from the mussel's supposed resemblance in shape and color to a mouse]
