moose

moose [ mooss ] (plural moose)

noun
Definition:

large animal with flat antlers: a large animal of the deer family, with long legs and, in the male, large flat palmate antlers. Native to: North America, Europe, Asia.  Latin name Alces alces.

[Early 17th century. < Abenaki mos]

Spelling Note

moose, mouse, or mousse? Do not confuse moose and mousse, which have a similar sound, or mousse and mouse, which have a similar spelling. A moose is a large animal with long legs and large antlers, whereas a mouse is a small animal with short legs and a long tail (or a computer input device of similar shape). Mousse is a light rich food containing whipped cream and eggs (as in chocolate mousse, salmon mousse) or a foamy substance used in hairdressing.
