member of ancient S American people: a member of an ancient Native South American people who lived along the coast of northern Peru, where their civilization lasted from the 6th century bc to the 2nd century bc. The Mochicas are particularly noted for their pottery, which was decorated with realistic paintings of human and animal forms.
