Cultural Note

A Midsummer Night's Dream, a play (1595?) by English dramatist William Shakespeare. A comedy set in a wood outside Athens, it brings together two young aristocratic couples, a group of tradesmen who are rehearsing a play, and Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies. A love potion administered by the sprite Puck has the unfortunate effect of making both the young noblemen fall in love with the same woman, and Titania with the weaver Bottom, but all is happily resolved in time for the tradesmen's performance of Pyramus and Thisbe. The saying "The course of true love never did run smooth" comes from this play.
