The Merchant of Venice, a play (1596-1597) by English dramatist William Shakespeare. The story revolves around a loan made by usurer Shylock to Venetian merchant Antonio, and Shylock's subsequent attempts to claim the pound of flesh he has stipulated as security. Among the more serious issues raised in this blend of comedy, romance, and realism are the correct administration of justice and the power conferred by wealth. The well-known saying "It is a wise father that knows his own child" comes from this play.
