Word Usage
masterful or masterly?

These two adjectives are interchangeable in the sense of "exceptionally skillful." Some people prefer to use masterly for this purpose, to prevent confusion with the other meaning of masterful, "showing the ability or tendency to lead others," which has derogatory overtones. Others avoid both adjectives, in view of the masculine associations of the word master.
