Cultural Note

Madame Bovary, a novel (1857) by French writer Gustave Flaubert. It tells the story of Emma Bovary, a young married woman who seeks refuge from the mundaneness of her provincial life in a series of reckless and ultimately disastrous affairs. The novel's frank depiction of middle-class society and its almost scientific analysis of human behavior made it a pioneering work of modern realism.
