ma·cron [ máy kròn, máykrən, má kròn ] (plural ma·crons)

Definition:
 
1. mark indicating long sound: a short horizontal line placed over a vowel sound to indicate that it is long or stressed. Macrons are used in the spelling system of some languages, in some phonetic transcription systems, and in the study or analysis of poetic meter.

2. long or stressed syllable: a stressed or long syllable in a foot of verse, marked with a macron
