noun  (plural lay·ers)
Definition:
 
1. flat covering over or between others: a single thickness of something that lies over or under something or between other similar thicknesses

2. somebody who lays something: somebody whose work is laying something such as tile or brick ( usually used in combination )
a bricklayer

3. laying hen: a hen that lays eggs

4. gardening rooted plant shoot: a branch or shoot that has been bent over and covered with soil to make it take root and grow into a new plant

Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb make layers of something: to apply or arrange things as separate thicknesses, or form into separate thicknesses

3. transitive and intransitive verb gardening propagate plant by rooting shoots: to bend a branch or shoot over and cover it with soil to make it take root as a new plant, or take root as a result of this procedure
