Definition:
 
1. at side: relating to, located at, or affecting the side

2. sideways in career, rather than up: involving transfer to a position in an organization or career that has the same status or pay as the previous one

3. phonetics produced with incomplete obstruction of air: describes a speech sound produced with the tip of the tongue touching the alveolar ridge so that air moves around one or both sides of the tongue. The only lateral sound in English is /l/.
