The Lady of the Lake, a poem (1810) by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Set in early 16th-century Scotland, it describes the eventful courtship of Ellen, daughter of outlawed chieftain James of Douglas, who lives at Loch Katrine (the lake of the title). Regarded as one of Scott's finest works, it is admired for its satisfying plot, strong characterization, and charming songs."Hail to the Chief who in triumph advances!", canto II, stanza 19, is a famed line in this work.
