Definition:
 
1. object made by tying: a usually hard, lump-shaped object formed when a strand of something such as string or rope is interlaced with itself or another strand and pulled tight

2. way of tying: a way of joining or securing lengths of rope, thread, or other strands by tying the material together or around itself

3. tangled mass: a tightly tangled mass of strands that are hard to separate

4. tight group: a number of people or things grouped closely together

5. tense feeling: a feeling of tightness or anxiety

Spelling Note
knot or not?

Do not confuse the spelling of knot and not, which sound similar. Knot is a verb or noun referring to the tying of rope, thread, etc.; as a noun it also denotes a round patch on wood, a measure of speed, or a tight group of people. Not is an adverb used to form a negative: I hope not. Not all children like ice cream.
