Jer·i·cho [ jérrikō ] town in the West Bank, in the Jordan Valley. It is regarded as the world's oldest town, with remains dating back to 8000 bc and, according to the Bible, was destroyed by Joshua after he led the Israelites back from captivity in Egypt (Joshua 3-8).
Population: 14,744 (1997 estimate).
