1. conflagration: a very large fire burning fiercely and uncontrollably, or a place being consumed by a large uncontrollable fire

2. hellish place: a place or situation that is reminiscent of hell, e.g. in being hot, fiery, or full of corruption

[Mid-19th century. Via Italian, "hell" < late Latin infernus (see infernal)]
