1. conversion of hydrocarbons: a high-temperature process in which hydrogen, with other catalysts, causes some hydrocarbons to break down, lose hydrogen, and rearrange themselves into aromatic or cyclic forms. It is used in the petroleum industry to impart better antiknock properties to gasoline.

2. metal shaping process: a process in which sheet metal is shaped by a punch forced against a flexible shaped block resting on a fluid-filled bag
