hold·back [ hṓld bàk ] (plural hold·backs)

Definition:
 
1. something held back: something withheld, usually wages or money

2. bonus for car dealer: an amount of money that an automobile manufacturer gives a dealer for each car sold, increasing the dealer's profit

3. something that hinders: something that prevents somebody from doing or achieving something, or prevents an event or plan from going ahead

4. device on horse-drawn wagon: a device on the shaft of a horse-drawn wagon or carriage that attaches to the harness, allowing the horse to hold back or back up the vehicle
