Spelling Note

hew or hue? Do not confuse the spelling of hew and hue, which sound similar. Hew is a verb meaning "cut," as in hew down a tree, roughly hewn wood, hew a path through the forest. Hue is a noun denoting a shade of color, a type, or the way something looks, as in flowers of every hue, to put a different hue on the matter. Hue is also the spelling used in the phrase hue and cry.
