transitive and intransitive verb 
Definition:
 
1. increase: to make something such as a feeling or emotion greater or more intense, or become greater or more intense
His attempts to reassure them served only to heighten their fears.

2. intensify in brightness: to make something such as a color appear brighter or stronger, or appear to become brighter or stronger
The sunlight heightened the flush on her cheeks.

3. extend upward: to make something higher, or become higher
As protection, they heightened the city walls by another three feet.
