hearse

hearse [ hurss ] (plural hears·es)

noun
Definition:

mortuary transport vehicle: a vehicle in which a coffin is carried to a funeral or a dead person is transported to a funeral home immediately after death

[13th century. Via French herse< Latin hirpex "rake, harrow"]

Word History

Agricultural harrows in the Middle Ages were typically toothed triangular frames, so the word for a harrow came to be applied in French to a similar frame for holding candles, particularly those placed over a coffin at funeral services. This was the meaning of hearse when English acquired it, and its meaning gradually developed from "canopy placed over a coffin" and "coffin, bier" to the modern sense of "funeral vehicle."
