Definition:
 
1. backless garment: a woman's garment, worn between the shoulders and waist, that fastens or passes behind the neck and leaves the arms, shoulders, and back bare
wore shorts and a halter on hot summer days

2. device for leading animal: an arrangement of ropes or leather straps put over the head of an animal, especially a horse, and used to lead it
