Definition:
 
1. welcome somebody: to welcome somebody in a cordial and usually conventional way

2. address somebody courteously: to address somebody in a polite and usually conventional way on meeting

3. address somebody in letter: to address a person or group at the start of a letter using a set formula

4. reply to something: to receive or respond to something in a particular way
The news was greeted with dismay.

5. become noticeable to somebody: to become perceptible to somebody, especially by way of the senses such as vision, hearing, or smell
The smell of a cake baking greeted them.
