Cultural Note

The Grapes of Wrath, a novel (1939) by writer John Steinbeck. A sympathetic portrayal of the plight of the rural poor during the Depression and an attack on capitalism, it tells of the tribulations suffered by the Joad family when they leave drought-stricken Oklahoma in search of work. It was made into a film by John Huston in 1940.
