Definition:
 
excess supply: a larger supply of something than is needed, especially of a crop or product
There is usually a glut of fresh vegetables in August.



transitive verb  (past and past participle glut·ted, present participle glut·ting, 3rd person present singular gluts)
Definition:
 
1. supply market with too much: to supply a market with an excess of something, especially a product, leading to a fall in price
Cheaper products from abroad glutted the market, lowering profits.

2. give somebody enough or too much: to feed or supply somebody with enough or more than enough of something

[14th century. Probably via Old French gloutir "swallow" < Latin gluttire (see glutton)]
