Definition:
 
1. something put over mouth: something such as a piece of cloth that is forcibly put over or into somebody's mouth to prevent the person from speaking or crying out

2. restraint of speech: a restraint on free speech
put a gag on a newspaper

3. comic words or action: a comic story, action, or incident told or performed by an actor or comedian

4. trick: a trick, hoax, or practical joke ( informal )

5. mouth prop: a device that is placed in a patient's mouth to keep it open during surgical work on the mouth or throat
