1. somebody emotionally close: somebody who trusts and is fond of another
I know her, in fact she's a friend of mine.

2. acquaintance: somebody who thinks well of or is on good terms with somebody else
I have a friend at the office who might be able to help out.

3. ally: an ally, or somebody who is not an enemy
You can say what you like about the principal; you're among friends here.

4. advocate of cause: a defender or supporter of a cause, group, or principle
She's no friend of tax-and-spend policies.

5. patron: a patron of a charity or institution. Friends of cultural institutions often receive privileges such as invitations to special events and the opportunity to order tickets before the general public.
