Spelling Note

freeze or frieze? Do not confuse the spelling of freeze and frieze, which sound similar. Freeze is chiefly used as a verb, meaning "make or become hard through cold," "stop moving," or "fix at a specific level." It is sometimes used as a noun, as in the big freeze of last winter, a price freeze. Frieze is only used as a noun, denoting a decorative band on a wall.
