forsythia

for·syth·i·a [ fər síthee ə, fawr síthee ə, fawr sthi ə ] (plural for·syth·i·as)

noun
Definition:

yellow-flowering bush: a bush that flowers in early spring before its leaves emerge. Flowers: yellow. Genus Forsythia.

[Mid-19th century. After William Forsyth (1737-1804), Scottish horticulturist]

The word forsythia can be pronounced three ways and all three are correct: /fər síthee ə, fawr síthee ə, fawr s thee ə, /. In the first two the i is pronounced like the i in it, and in the third it is pronounced like the i in ice. In some regions of the United States, the last pronunciation is prevalent.
