Cultural Note

Flag, a painting by Jasper Johns (1945). The first of many such variations that Johns created on this theme, it consists of a U.S. flag painted on canvas using encaustic. Its apparent banality infuriated many commentators; others responded positively to its playful ambiguity (is it a flag or a painting?) and saw it as Johns' reaction to the emotionalism of Abstract Expressionism.
