The term fireboard is largely restricted to the highlands of Appalachia in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and the Ozarks of Arkansas. In these places, fireboard contrasts with the general currency word mantel, with Southern mantelpiece, and, in the interior lower plains of Georgia and Alabama, with the blend mantelboard.
