Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb design cut design into something with acid: to create a design or drawing on the surface of something, especially a printing plate, by the action of an acid

2. transitive and intransitive verb cut marks with something sharp: to cut a design or mark into the surface of something using a sharp point or laser beam

3. transitive verb make something clearly visible: to leave a clear and distinct impression of something ( usually passive )
His sorrow was etched on his face.
