escalate

es·ca·late [ éskə làyt ] (past and past participle es·ca·lat·ed, present participle es·ca·lat·ing, 3rd person present singular es·ca·lates)

transitive and intransitive verb
Definition:

increase: to become or cause something to become greater, more serious, or more intense

[Early 20th century. Back-formation <escalator]

es·ca·la·tion [ èskə láysh'n ] noun
es·ca·la·to·ry [ éskələ tàwree ] adjective

Word Usage

No one uses escalate now to mean "travel on an escalator," and the figurative meaning has taken over completely. Its earliest and still most common uses are in connection with military activity and conflicts: Tourists were advised not to travel to the country as terrorist attacks continued to escalate. It is used most effectively when it describes a development that proceeds in stages, rather than as a simple synonym for increase or mount.
